What is the Gospel?
The Gospel is the good news of Jesus Christ!
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. (Genesis 1) When God was done with His creation He looked at all He had made and saw that it was very good. (Genesis 1:31) In the beginning creation, including humans, lived in harmony with God but the first humans chose to depart from God and His perfect design by disobeying His command. (Genesis 3) The first humans essentially decided to go their own way and not follow God. We all do this at some point and when we do it is sin. the Bible says that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. (Romans 3:23) Sin separated the first humans from God and when they departed from God’s design brokenness entered the world. Humans since that time have tried so many ways to deal with brokenness in the world and in their own lives. Some try to work harder to avoid the brokenness. Some try to use drugs, alcohol, or sex to escape the brokenness. Some focus on relationship or try to be a “good person” to heal the brokenness. We try to do all these things to fill the hole of brokenness yet the more we try to escape brokenness the more these things just pull us back into the broken world. The truth is there is nothing we can do to cure or remedy brokenness.
The good news, the Gospel truth, is that God loved us so much He didn’t want to leave us in brokenness, He does not want us to spend eternity in hell because of sin. That is not His design for our life. God knows that we could not get out of brokenness on our own so God entered into our brokenness for us. The Gospel tells us that because we couldn’t get back to God on our own, God came for us. He did this by sending His only Son, Jesus Christ, to take the punishment for our sin. (1 Peter 3:18) Jesus lived on earth and He never departed from God’s perfect design. While we were still sinners Jesus died on the cross. (Romans 5:8) God put the weight of all the worlds sin (past, present, and future) on Jesus. Jesus died the death that we deserved, and rose 3 days later from the dead. He proved that He was who He said He was, and that He did for us what we could not do for ourselves.
The way we enter into a relationship with Jesus and accept the gift of forgiveness and a restored relationship with God is by repenting and believing. Jesus declared that if anyone would turn from their sin (repenting and admitting their need for Him) and believing that Jesus came, died, and rose again they would be saved – forgiven and made new. When we turn from our sin and declare Jesus the Lord of our life we then begin to recover and purse God’s design for our own life. Just as Jesus entered into the brokenness for us, as we begin to recover and purse God’s plan for our lives, God actually sends us back into the brokenness to point people to Jesus so they too can can be saved, restored, and pursue God’s plan for their life.
The truth is we are all living in one of two places – we are either living in brokenness apart from God or we are living Saved and Forgiven as part of God’s design for our life. Check your heart today, where are you living and if it is in brokenness what is keeping you from responding to Jesus?
